How to Fix Low Shower Pressure

Low shower pressure is frustrating but usually easy to fix yourself. The cause is typically a blocked showerhead, a partially closed valve, or a problem with your water pressure overall.

Common Causes

The most common culprit is a limescale-blocked showerhead โ€” especially in hard water areas. Other causes include a faulty pressure regulator, partially closed isolation valves, or a failing shower pump.

Step-by-Step Fix

1

Clean the showerhead

Remove the showerhead and soak it in white vinegar overnight. This dissolves limescale blocking the nozzles. Use a toothbrush to scrub remaining deposits.

2

Check isolation valves

Find the valves under the sink or near the shower. They should be fully open (handle in line with the pipe). A partially closed valve significantly reduces pressure.

3

Check your boiler pressure

If you have a combi boiler, low system pressure (below 1 bar) reduces shower pressure. Repressurise using the filling loop.

4

Install a shower pump

If you have a gravity-fed system and pressure is consistently low, a shower pump boosts flow significantly. This is a straightforward plumber job.
